Jesus, also called Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazareth, is the central figure of Christianity, the world’s largest religion. He is believed by most Christian denominations to be the incarnation of God the Son and the awaited Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament.
Jesus was born around 4-6 B.C. in Bethlehem. His mother, Mary, was a virgin who was visited by the angel Gabriel and told that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit. His earthly father, Joseph, was a carpenter.
Little is known about his early life, but Jesus speaks up publicly in Judaic assemblies when he is about 30. He claimed to be the messiah and taught about the kingdom of God and how it was realized through personal transformation. He also performed miracles, healing sick people and even raising people from the dead.
